Living out in the country is really starting to set in, we have a mud pit for a yard, and the latest "developments" are pushing the envelope a little past my liking. Jarred, being the "yard man" that he is, is desperately trying to get the yard started before May when they can hydra-mulch. He has been spreading seed around the yard for almost 3 weeks with hopes in the forecast for a wet day followed by a couple of warm days for the seed to germinate. So far our efforts have not been successful. However, we have inadvertantly "adopted" a whole flock of doves. They have been feasting on the seed, and in just these few weeks have grown to the size of small chickens!!! No kidding!! I'm beginning to doubt if they can even fly anymore. The kids are starting to think of them as "pets" as they just waddle around the back yard pecking at the ground. I actually thought it was funny, until I discovered something yesteday... While folding laundry, like a good housewife, I happened to look out the patio door and to my surprise found a large amount of feathers on the patio off of our bedroom. My maternal instincts kicked in and I was immediately disturbed by what was attacking my little "babies". We've been warned about coyotes around here and the thought of having them so close to the house freaked me out! However, my fears were quickly put to rest when I realized there was also a large amount of poop accompanining the feathers. I no longer had ANY "maternal" feelings for these little critters at all!! They have been roosting on our patio!!! Ugh! As soon as Jarred gets home we have got to devise a plan to rid ourselves of this situation. Wait, I seriously just had a "light bulb" moment.... Colby told me yesterday that he wants to be a zoologist when he grows up (just like Jack Hannah). Cleaning up all that poop will be good practice for the little guy! Afterall, when you work at a zoo, you clean up a lot of "stuff". Well, at least I'll keep that in mind as a back up plan. LOL!
On a MUCH SWEETER note, the oreo truffles were amazing yesterday and so super easy! The kids actually made them, I just supervised. I got the recipe off of the Bakerella website (I have a link on my blog), but I've included the recipe here.
OREO TRUFFLES
Ingredients:
1 bag oreos (minus 7 -- not sure why, but you get to just eat the 7 or save them for something else)
8 oz. cream cheese (softened)
Chocolate (I used Almond Bark, but I imagine you could use chocolate chips, candy bar, etc)
Directions,
Put oreos in a plastic bag and beat with wooden spoon until finely crushed (or put them in a food processor). Stir in softened cream cheese. Shape into 1 inch balls and place on wax paper. Put in freezer for 20 minutes or longer. Melt chocolate. Roll balls in chocolate and place back on wax paper. Let chocolate set in refridgerator and ENJOY!!!! So good! Makes about 30 truffles.
Johanna makes very similar oreo "balls." The only difference is she uses a whole bag of double stuf oreos....I adapted the recipe at Christmas and sprinkled them with green and red sprinkles while the almond bark was still wet. Yum!
