There's "Something" in the Air... But it's NOT "Spring"!!!

So with the warmer temperatures and the "breezy" (20 mph) winds, the air is filled with all kinds of aromas.  You know, I left Lubbock dragging my heels in the red dirt, but the one thing I was NOT going to miss was the hot summer days when the wind blew out of the east (where the feed lots are located) "perfuming" the entire city.  YUCK!!  Unfortunatley I have yet to escape that as we have now cattle in the "neighborhood.  Lovely!  I'm told that ranchers call that the smell of money... I however have a different opinion.  In addition to the cattle, we have a surprising number of skunks.  Thankfully we haven't seen them in our neighborhood, but  it's become a game to see who can spot (&smell) the new dead skunks on the road first on the way to school! LOL!

Chloe & I did make it to Lowe's yesterday to begin shopping for the garden, herb garden & flower beds.  It was a beautiful day and I had little expectations, but I loved it!  Gardening has always been more of Jarred's thing, but I now think I could shop for dirt and be happy.  Jarred is right... I LOVE TO SHOP!   We got all kinds of fun plants... strawberries, blueberry shrubs, lots of herbs, and these yummy smelling yellow broom bushes.  I also picked up a Wysteria shrub -- one of my favorite all time smells.  I know my plants wont be able to compete with the smell of "money", but every little bit helps!!!

Last night we  also had some excitment at our house!!!   The garden dirt arrived!  You would have thought it was Christmas... the kids were SO excited!  Colby was so funny... he said he couldn't concentrate because the noise and excitement was such a "destruction". Ha!  Kids are so cute!

As soon as the truck pulled away the kids were staring at me with BIG eyes and I caved and let them fulfill their "destiny" as country kids!  LOL!  They actually call themselves the "Country Kids Club"... it's so cute, until Madeline completely quit wearing dresses because according to her, "Country girls don't wear those."  Guess I'll be showing her some Little House on the Prarie movies this summer to clarify that!  Anyway, here's a picture of my lil' "country bumpkins". Hee hee!

They had so much fun here.. they dug tunnels, made "beds", slides, you name it!   They had a BLAST!  They even carted some off to their "fortress". Needless to say, I'm firmly convinced we could get rid of all of our kids toys and just keep a pile of dirt in the backyard and they would be thrilled!

Madeline takes great pride in telling me that I'm a "city girl" and she's a "country" one.  I'd have to agree with her 100%, but after just a few short months, I'm starting to come around.  However, yesterday I came up with my top 5 list of "You know you live in the Country When..."  based on my experiences of living here so far.

5. You have a septic tank
4. You can drive to get the mail
3. You can hear a rooster from your backyard.
2.  You have to use your bright lights to see your driveway at night.
1.  Your neighbors have cattle.

Well, I need to get working on my fun surprise for the family today!  I've come up with a pretty cute "April Fool's" meal for dinner.  I'll post all about it with pictures tomorrow!

  1. My friends always said they knew I was a "country girl" when I would say "I have to go to town, or I can be in town in about 15 minutes". Now Brynlee says, "mommy let's go to town". Glad you are enjoying some of the joys of living in the country. It's great your kids are loving it too. I was just thinking today how much I loved growing up in the country and the things my kids will miss when we move to the city. My brother and I I always played in the mud, laid on blankets in the fields and played with our toys, & just had so much fun exploring our surroundings.
